| Taken from that highly respected paper the Sun... "TRAFFIC in central London has slowed to walking pace, a shock survey revealed last night. Cars, trucks and vans are averaging just 2.9mph — and manage only 1.6mph on some routes. Mayor Ken Livingstone is being blamed — together with a spate of roadworks that have left streets gridlocked. Mr Livingstone’s transport chiefs are altering traffic lights to hamper drivers before his new £5 congestion charge comes in on February 17. The survey, verified by the RAC, showed it is now quicker to walk than drive on some roads. " What does this go to show? That even when they're given really big hints people in cars can't actually dare leave the car at home. What will get people to realise that they don't actually need to drive into London. All the guff about public transport being rubbish and inadequate is nonsense. In other parts of the country there are genuine problems with getting a bus or train, but this is london! London has an underground service and hundreds of buses. Why won't some of these car drivers let go of their comfy little boxes and walk/get the tube or the bus? What speed will these cars have to crawl at before they realise that they may as well have got the bus? Some people will say "Oh I need my car to get to work" or "I have to carry stuff with me" or "I don't like the tube" I don't like car pollution - I don't like walking past piles of cars sat stinking out exhaust fumes. I however make good use of my arms and legs and walk where-ever possible, catch the bus if I need to carry something heavy and if its too heavy to take on the bus I get a taxi - but only if I have to! The public transport network will improve if more people use it - more people means more potential profit, and companies will have to increase and improve their services. Perhaps what Ken did wrong was to ask for £5 off car drivers, maybe he should have given them a fiver to leave their car at home? Just how do you get car owners to leave their cars at home? |
